#1 Is Overrated | Be Real Do Better - The Small Business Marketing Show, Ep. 27

This episode is not meant to diminish anyone’s accomplishments in any way.

It is meant to call out (what I feel is) another lazy advertising cliche that often muddles our message, blends us in with rest and, in some cases, represents an unnecessary limiting belief that keeps some people from getting started in the first place.

Not everyone can be “number one,” and yet is certainly seems like most local marketers and online entrepreneurs are trying to tell me that they are, in one form or another.

Best-seller.

Expert.

Leader.

Biggest.

Best.

Number one.

Frankly, I don’t care if you’re “number one.” What I care about is if you can help me or not, add value or not, take care of me or not.

Here’s what else I care about:

Anyone who holds themselves up from getting started into something that matters to them and learning, growing and communicating in a genuine and authentic way because they feel they need to be “number one” or an “expert” or “best-seller” in order for their work to have value.

There are all kinds of examples of culturally significant brands, people, places and organizations that have tremendous value and positive impact who were (or are) not, technically, “number one” in their field. I offer just a few in this episode.

My advice: Don’t worry about being “number one.” Worry about being remarkable. And the way to do that is to allow yourself to be yourself, to share your own story, vision and unique creative gifts in your own way. Do that, and you will find and connect with the people you are uniquely equipped to serve.

If that carries you to “number one” in your field, so be it. But if not, so what? You’ll be far too busy – and content – doing what you love for people who appreciate you to notice or care.
