5 Books That Changed My Life & The Stories Behind Them – No Schedule Man Podcast, Ep. 27

No Schedule Man Podcast Episode 27Every once in a while, a book comes along and gives you exactly what you need to see precisely when you need to see it. That describes my recent experience with a book called “10% Happier” by Dan Harris. I can’t remember when or why I added to my list of books to read that I keep in my phone, but it was on that list (and in stock) when I was last at the library and so I took Harris’s book home and happily devoured it. The story and message of “10% Happier” hit me right between the eyes of how I’m viewing own journey at the moment.

Some books are like that. Their contents stick with you and become a permanent part of your experience, personality, and thought process from that point forward.

With that in mind, I decided to do a podcast on five books that have had that effect on me and to share my personal stories of why they’ve meant so much. My hope is that it will eventually help someone else, and possibly even save them from some of the personal challenges I’ve been through. Of course, we don’t all like the same things. These books may not be the right ones for you, and that’s okay. On the other hand, as you’ll hear in the podcast, I didn’t find out about all of these on my own. A former Sales Rep first told me about Gay Hendricks. A former colleague gave me “The Four Agreements.” And I first heard about “The Magic of Thinking Big” from someone I’ve looked up to who has since become a friend and has also been featured on an earlier episode of this podcast.

So you never know. Maybe one of these will help someone? I sure hope so.

The five books & stories are:

  1. Conscious Living by Gay Hendricks and how it helped me through a divorce and the process of personal reinvention in the time since.
  1. Five Wishes by Gay Hendricks and how it helped me to see what I needed to be doing (or not doing) to be able to view my life as a success.
  1. The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz and how it helped me to see a lot of the traps I was setting for myself (making assumptions, taking things personally) and what to do about it.
  1. The Magic of Thinking Big by David. J Schwartz and what happened to me when I began to do everything it suggested.
  1. Tao Te Ching (Stephen Mitchell Translation) and how it began to transform my view of things like strength, power & peace of mind.

I also mention a couple of others that have helped me understand what my “Upper Limit Problems” are and how I can be making quantum leaps in my life from this point on.

  • thanks for your review on these books. I shall be checking out The magic of thinking big

  • I’ve added Conscious Living to my wish list. 🙂 I’ve been reading a Tony Robbins book recently called Unlimited Power and it’s really eye opening to how I perceive my life and how I react to it. I wish I had read it years ago.

    • Hi Sarah,
Thanks for the note and for visiting. I like Tony Robbins, too and appreciate you mentioning him. I haven’t read anything from him in a long time. I’ve put him back on MY list!
I hope you enjoy Conscious Living when the time comes. I love, love, love that book!
      Best wishes,
      Kevin

    Hello Kevin =)

Once again you manage to produce an amazing work of art with your posts… you really do draw in the reader.

I actually haven’t read any of those books so I will add them to my “must read” list.

    Thanks =)

    • Hey Lawrence!
Thanks, pal. I deeply appreciate those encouraging words. You do the same with your posts, so I consider your observations a nice compliment. Thank you.
Thanks for the visit and the comments. I’m grateful.
      Best wishes,
      Kevin

  • I’m interested in the Magic of thinking big! Self help books can really make a difference as well as articles. The article that helped me the most when I was in a low place was called “7 harsh truths that will make you a better person” by David Wong. Have you ever heard of it?

    • Hey Dan,
No, I’ve not heard of that but I sure appreciate you mentioning it here. I’ll go have a look!
      Thanks for visiting.
      Best wishes,
      Kevin

    Hi there Kevin,
I really love this podcast! Your list is great, I have actually read 3 of those 5 books; Five wishes, The Magic of Thinking Big and Tao Te Ching! Coincidence? Naeh, I just read a lot and you seem to share my taste! I often fall in love with a book and read it over and over. There is no substitute for the teaching of a good book, funny thing is that everyone interprets them in a different way depending on their own experiences 🙂
I really loved the book by Tao Te Ching, as it really closely follows my own believes and thoughts. I am Ayurvedic health practitioner and I somehow relate the teachings of this book with Ayurvedic Sattvic Mind concept.

    • Sounds like we have a lot in common! Thanks for visiting and for your comments. I agree, not only do different people interpret books differently, but I find that I get new and different things from them when I re-read all or parts of them as I grow and change as a person as well.
I really like your site and encourage anyone here who sees this to pay you a visit.
      Best wishes!
      Kevin

  • Hi Kev,

It appears that I’ve read one of the books in your list- The Magic of thinking Big. I think that the ideas invoked are very interesting and important.
My life changing reads are 2- Mind Power by John Kehoe and The Holographic Universe by Michael Talbot . I definitely recommend them both.

    • Hey Asen,
Thanks for the visit and for the suggestions! That’s terrific. I’ll put Mind Power and The Holographic Universe on my list!
      Best wishes,
      Kevin

  • Great list of books you’ve provided Kevin. Just in time for the gift giving season and I hope people give out that gift of personal self development. We could all use a bit of this to enhance our positive growth as a human being. I hope you sell a ton of these and I’m going to use some of these to help me on my journey. Thanks for this.
    Cheers, Peter.

    • Thanks Peter! I appreciate the visit and the comments.
      Best wishes,
      Kevin
