Reinvention & Focusing on Possibility: Gair Maxwell – NSM Podcast, Ep. 22
Reinvention. That idea has come up many times in previous podcast discussions, and it’s probably no coincidence. Evolution is a key part of what the idea of being a “No Schedule Man” is all about, and it’s a fundamental fact of life. Sooner or later, we all face change, by both choice and chance. It’s what we do with those opportunities that defines the next part of our journey. And I never get tired of hearing about people who have done just that. So when I learned about Gair Maxwell and his “Reinvention Chronicles,” I just knew I’d enjoy talking to him.
I was right. You’re going to love him.

Gair Maxwell is an International Speaker, Author of the critically-acclaimed book, “Nuts, Bolts & a few Loose Screws,” and a Reinvention Strategist. With a background in Broadcast Journalism, Gair himself has been reinvented, long ago transitioning into a life of speaking, coaching and creating, which led him to being recognized as TEC Canada’s “Speaker of the Year” in 2012.
Gair brought all kinds of helpful insights to this episode. Some of them include being set up to “receive” (listen and learn) as opposed to always being stuck on “transmit” (making it about us, doing more talking than listening); Going from getting fired to getting fired up; re-purposing experiences and skills we’ve acquired throughout our journey; and what a real “window of opportunity” most often actually looks like, and what you need to do when you see one.
Aside from those great bits of wisdom, there were three key takeaways that stood out from my time with Gair Maxwell. They were:
- It’s not about the many. It’s about the ONE. You never know who’s listening / watching / reading and how what you’re sharing may impact them. Sharing your experiences openly and genuinely helps others – and ourselves – in ways we often cannot conceive of at the time. Don’t worry about thousands upon thousands of views, listens, fans, clicks, likes or shares. It’s about a genuine connection with the ONE.
- Understanding Purpose vs Result. For instance: the purpose of a business is to make money. Is it? Or is that the result of fulfilling the real purpose?
- Focus on Possibility as opposed to Problems. This is a great lesson in business and in life.
This particular conversation took place in a coffee shop. So it sounds like we’re, well, in a coffee shop. So brew a fresh cup, pull up a seat and sit in with us. It was a fun and lively conversation that I’m sure you’ll enjoy.
